Mid-term Meeting & 2nd CREEP Workshop

The Mid-term meeting was held on Monday 13 February 2017. During this meeting, the European project officer from the Research Executive Agency and the external reviewer assessed the fulfilment of all aspects (scientific, training, management, etc) of the project. The ESRs met the project officer for the first time and they presented themselves explaining where they were coming from, what was their project in CREEP and how they imagine their future. The scientific coordinator made a general presentation, explaining the proceedings of the project from the recruitment of the students to the organization of the scientific projects.
The 2nd CREEP workshop started on Tuesday 14 February 2017 in the beautiful Sala Capizucchi from RomaTre University in the centre of Rome. The ESRs and the external student participants explained their work in a challenging 2-minute presentation followed by an animated poster session.
The workshop had the chance to welcome six invited speakers : Yannick Ricard from ENS Lyon, FR (“Feedbacks between deformation, grain size and rheology”), Jean-Paul Ampuero from Caltech, USA (“Effective friction laws for large-scale earthquake modeling: bridging the gap from laboratory to natural scales”), Alessandro Amato from INGV, IT (“The 2016 Amatrice-Norcia -Central Italy- seismic sequence: overview and lessons learned”), Warner Marzocchi from INGV, IT (“Seismic Risk associated with Natural and Anthropogenic Hazard”), Massimo Cocco from INGV, IT (“Data and Service for solid Earth Science: Open Science and Ethic Issues, the European Plate Observing System experience”), and Francesca Ciffelli from Roma Tre (“The geology of Rome”).
The second morning was devoted to group discussions around three main themes (Rheology of the mantle, Fault rheology on a microscale vs faulting, and Plate tectonics and earthquakes) selected by the ESRs. The workhop ended by a plenary meeting in which the students made restitutions of the different group discussions.
